Jake Monaghan is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy (research) at the University of New Orleans with a joint appointment as a researcher in the Urban Entrepreneurship and Policy Institute. Previously, Monaghan was a PhD candidate at University at Buffalo, where he completed a dissertation on political legitimacy and consent. His current research interests include theories of political legitimacy (especially pertaining to the legitimacy of the criminal justice system and policing). What does permissible and excellent policing look like? Most people experience the power of the government by interacting with the police, so this is an especially interesting question of political legitimacy. He has published papers in the Philosophical Quarterly, the Journal of Political Philosophy, and the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, and elsewhere.
